April 4, 2024

It was 9:30 in the morning back in April 1971, and the homeowners on Barren Road were having an addition added to their house. The house was home to Louis and Doris Seliguine, and their nine children. A gas line headed into the house was compromised and filled the house with gas, which ignited, destroying the house.

Assistant Chief Joe Greer arrives to flames shooting out nearly every window in the house. An immediate call was placed to the Broomall and Bon Air Fire Companies for assistance. The fire was brought under control in just under three hours; however, the damage to the house had already been done.

Several firefighters were injured during the blaze including John Taymen and Sal Severino who were treated for smoke inhalation. Frank McDonald was treated for burns, and Fire Fighter Carl Ewing was transported to the hospital for both burns the roof he was standing on gave way and he tumbled to the ground.

All fire firefighters recovered, and Carl Ewing is still an active member of the Newtown Square Fire Company.

The Newtown Square Fire Company has been an important member of this community for the last 108 years thanks to many community members who donated both time as a volunteer and with financial support.
